In for a penny...

Well, today marks the launch of a streamlined website and renovated portfolio!

As I mentioned here, this change in illustration style is a return to a style of drawing that marked the beginning of my work as a professional illustrator. Back in the day, my work was accomplished with watercolor and pencil and tons of tracing paper! Now its all digital and much easier to alter should the need arise.

This decision, however, was marked with a lot of hesitation. Questions were running through my head: Is this a smart thing to do? Will Art Directors be interested? Will I still be able to get work? Am I simply indulging a stupid personal whim rather than making a smart professional decision? Those questions still are turning over in my head...

Originally, I considered offering the two distinct styles in separate portfolios, giving clients a choice. It certainly would have eased the transition and given me a chance to gauge the response to the new work. But over the last several months, a few of my clients have allowed themselves to be guinea pigs as I worked out the details of this new style. (Thanks!) So far, the ADs have been really receptive to the changes and they've been great sources of feedback.

A change like this is nerve-wracking and stressful. I was putting it off for a while, waiting for the right time to focus on it. But the right time never presents itself on its own. There's always a reason to wait. That's why I decided to just launch out full-bore and see what happens.

My mom is from England and there's a British saying: 'In for a penny, in for a pound.' There's never a better time than right now. And if you're gonna try something, go for broke. There's no 'Plan B'.

Now it's time to stop talking about and get to work...

As in most things in life: you can't win if you don't play. Way to go. Keep pushing boundaries. When it gets hard and hurts, you know you're doing it right.
